Pediatric Dental Services

It is important to have a dental provider for your child from the time your child’s first tooth erupts around 6 months of age. The goal of these early exams is prevention. Early childhood caries (decay) and the resulting cavities, can be prevented if the right precautions are taken. If your child does get cavities, it is important to diagnose them as soon as possible to prevent them from getting large. Generally, a child does not start having regular dental cleanings until 3 years of age, but should have a yearly exam before then.

Children need special care during their dental treatment. We take the time to explain our procedures to children using a process called Tell-Show-Do. We always take the time to handle children with sensitive understanding, which makes the child comfortable with the new environment. Our treatment of children starts with an exam and possibly a cleaning. For anxious children we provide nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas), which helps relax the child, but does not put the child to sleep.

If your child requires sedation for dental treatment, he or she will be referred to a pediatric dentist. Most children are fine in the dentist’s office at any age without sedation.
